Running Merit Badge #1

Hey, look!  My rehearsal dinner dress came!

Or, you know, not.  The invoice described this as a “white eyelet dress” from Victoria’s Secret…but yeah, it’s not.  This is what I ordered:

Decidedly different.  Hmm.  Methinks I’ll be on the phone with Ms. Victoria tomorrow.

Anyway, I was a bad blogger and forgot to take pictures pretty much all day.  It was really busy at work—I’m going on an overnight quick trip tomorrow and had a bunch of stuff to finish up today.  I had a green monster, some Annie’s Bernie-O’s, and one of Susan’s homemade protein bars at various intervals throughout the day!

After work, I went to run.  Good lord, was it hot in the gym!  I have to say, I enjoyed it not being pitch black before and after my workout—it was nice to walk out to my car in sunshine.  Anyway, today I did 5 miles, like so:

  • 1 mile at 6.0 mph
  • 1 mile at 6.1 mph
  • 1 mile at 6.2 mph
  • 1 mile at 6.3 mph
  • 1 mile at 6.4 mph

For a grand total of 5 miles in about 48:15.  I was really working hard at the end but it felt good to sweat.  My glutes, hamstrings, and inner thighs (what’s that muscle called?) have also been quite sore from Saturday’s random lifting circuit, and it was nice to get the blood pumping and get them moving again.

Okay, you guys.  I have to announce something.  I think I’ve earned my first proverbial running merit badge:

A black toenail!  The black part is getting darker and larger every time I run.  It felt funny for awhile a few weeks ago, but doesn’t hurt anymore and is just getting uglier and uglier.

Is it weird that I am kind of feeling particularly badass about this?  I know, I know, I should want pretty toenails for my wedding…but…this is so much cooler.  I have kind of a morbid fascination with various athletic injuries and the general weird shit running does to our bodies, and this is my own mark of honor.

Anyway.  1 yes RSVP, 3 nos.

The human body and the things sports do to it: cool or gross?  Discuss.

  1. You definitly earned a proverbial running merit badge! You did that run in great time. I’m sure your toenails will be gorgeous by the time of your wedding 🙂

  2. Very nice! I lost my big toenail about 2 weeks before my wedding playing adult league soccer. I thought it was pretty sweet! I love your blog and you are definitely inspiring!!

  3. Victoria got it wrong! I hope she doesn’t with the bathing suit that’s coming for me! Uh oh…

  4. Congrats on the toe nail! 🙂 Sorry, I couldn’t resist. But I think most of things that running does to our bodies are cool, and not gross. I think about the lower heart rate, lowered cholesterol, weight loss, added energy…the list goes on. I will put an occasional toe nail on the alter for those things. 🙂 Great job on the run by the way.

  5. I can’t believe you have all these foot problems with running! I’ve never had anything like that.

Isn’t it fun checking the mail for RSVPs? So far we have 55 yes, 10 no. tons more to go…

  6. Black toenail = nothing nail polish can’t fix. I had one for my wedding and nobody even noticed. Only wish I had earned it running not from dropping a box fan on my foot.

Sports injuries are cool. My husband tore his ACL skiing in December and I actually said (with much gusto), “You’re gonna have a really kick-ass scar!” Hey, focus on the positive, right?

  7. My big toenail FELL OFF after my run. Yep. Fell off. I was kind of sad at first, but then felt like a total badass. I had my first nail casualty. I felt like a real runner. Congrats. 🙂

  8. LOL Those pants are definitely not wedding material… or are they? 😛

Ouch, the little running trophy does not look comfortable. I’m dreading the day I get that infamous black to nail (or two).

  9. I think the black toenail is merit badge #2. Blistersquatch was #1! I’ve had a couple black toenails, but they were on my little toes. They ended up falling off eventually. A friend told me about a sign she saw while running a marathon: “toenails are for sissies!”

  10. My fiance’s big toenail fell off a few days after a marathon. I have to admit, I thought it was pretty cool!

  11. Inner thigh is often referred to “adductor” muscles. I just learned that in my muscular concepts chapter!

I’m sorry, but the fact that you got sent hideous Hawaii shorts instead of a pretty dress is hilarious!! What, you can’t just wear those instead?? 😛

  12. I got one black toenail last year when I was training for a half marathon that eventually fell off. I realized that I was getting it because my toenails were long and it was hitting the front of my shoe every time I ran. I started to make sure I kept my toenails very short..cut them every week or so to keep them down..and I haven’t have a problem with them at all since then. Try keeping your toenails as short as possible and it should help.
